Our Approach
Internal Family Systems
At Parts of Me Therapy we use The Internal Family Systems therapeutic approach. It takes the idea that all of us have different parts to us. Almost like having these small voices inside of us. These parts of us are different for everyone and express themselves in different ways. They can be thoughts, sensations, or feelings.
You may have at times feel torn by being pulled in two different directions. Clients will often say “A part of me feels…but another part of me feels…”. This is a perfect example of two parts within you.
We get into an internal conflict when these parts have to take on extreme roles, or get stuck in the past.
You also have what we call a Self. We refer to Self as a state of being. Many spiritual practices have different words for this phenomenon but we call it Self. The Self has tremendous ability to help your parts heal and relieve some of the hardships they carry. The great thing about this approach is that we all have a Self, we just may need some help accessing it.
Clients love this framework because it helps them understand what’s going on internally. It doesn’t pathologize people like most therapy does and it offers a warm, safe environment. Therapy is designed to get clients to access their Self and heal their burdened parts. Clients report feeling less turmoil, physically better, and a sense of calmness when they can access Self.
